It is my great pleasure to welcome all participants to the 2nd Rwanda Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Conference 2024, with the theme, “Promoting Climate Resilient Agriculture Through Science, Technology, and Innovation for Improved Food Security and Nutrition,” held at the Kigali Convention Center (KCC), Kigali, Rwanda.

This conference serves as a crucial global platform to showcase the transformative role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in advancing climate-resilient agriculture. As we face escalating climate challenges, the importance of STI cannot be overstated. It not only helps to safeguard sustainable food systems but also equips agriculture to withstand environmental shocks. Moreover, this event emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts among researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to accelerate the adoption of innovative, resilient agricultural practices.

We are thrilled to have participation from a diverse range of countries, including the USA, UK, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, and many others. Over the next two days, participants can look forward to a scientifically enriching experience. The conference will highlight groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence, data science, IoT, and more, all aimed at improving agricultural productivity, enhancing crop yields, and promoting sustainability. Sessions will cover key topics such as precision agriculture, biotechnology, mechanization, and climate-smart farming techniques, offering a platform for sharing cutting-edge technologies and solutions shaping the future of agriculture.

We are especially grateful to the Government of Rwanda for its generous support in making this event possible. A special thanks to Rwanda Ministry of agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) as well as Rwanda agriculture and Animal Resources Board (RAB), whose contribution have been instrumental in the organization of this conference. I would also like to thank University of Rwanda, INES University and East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO).  This event also provides a significant opportunity for global experts to engage in discussions around pressing issues, such as closing the digital divide and addressing data gaps critical to promoting climate-resilient agriculture.

Our heartfelt thanks also go to the members of the Scientific Committee for their incredible dedication in ensuring the success of this event. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the renowned keynote speakers and panelists, whose invaluable insights will enrich this conference.

As I end my remarks, I wish all participants a successful and impactful conference. Our vision is to host this event every two years, celebrating excellence in STI with prestigious awards for outstanding scientists in well-publicized gala ceremonies.

As we move forward, each of us has a crucial role to play in transformation of agriculture and food systems towards resilience and sustainability, with equity and innovation at the core of our efforts.
